Incomplete Protein

Incomplete proteins are those that are missing, or do not have enough of, one or more of the essential amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and essential amino acids are those that the body is not able to obtain trough known chemical pathways by transforming other amino acids. Those essential amino acids need to be provided in the diet.

Since protein and amino acids are everywhere in the human body – bones, skin, muscles, enzymes – when the body is short of any of the essential amino acids it is forced to enter in catabolic state. That means breaking muscle tissue in order to obtain the needed amino acids. That is why incomplete protein is considered inferior to complete.

Complete protein is mainly found in animal food sources. On the other hand most plant sources are incomplete sources. We can obtain some protein from legumes, nuts, beans , cereals, lentils and peas, but the proteins from these sources do not contain all the essential amino acids and are not as easily absorbed as the animal proteins.
