Ketosis
Ketosis is a state in which your body use exclusively fat as fuel. If the diet is changed from a highly glycemic diet to a very low carb diet, the body goes through a set of stages to finally enter ketosis. During the initial phase of this process the human brain does not efficiently use ketones as fuel. This is why ketogenic diets can cause brain fog in their initial phase. However past this initial period the brain makes immediate use of this important substrate for lipid synthesis in the brain. After about 48 hours from the start of this process, the brain starts burning ketones in order to more directly utilize the energy from the fat stores that are being depended upon, and to reserve the glucose only for its absolute needs, thus avoiding the depletion of the body's protein store in the muscles.
Being in ketosis is the ultimate indicator you have switched to fat burning mode. This is why so many diets try to induce ketosis in order to improve weight loss results. However keep in mind that using ketosis to treat obesity still remains controversial.
